How many years does it take for an EV to pay for itself in Australia?

For a typical Australian driver doing 15,000 km a year, an EV breaks even against an equivalent petrol car in roughly 5 to 9 years. The exact number depends on the purchase-price gap, your electricity tariff, the petrol price, and how much you drive. Use the break-even calculator above to plug in your own numbers — the year the cumulative savings line crosses the upfront premium is your payback point.

What inputs do I need for the EV break-even calculator?

Five inputs: the petrol car drive-away price, the EV drive-away price, your annual kilometres, the petrol price per litre you actually pay, and your electricity price per kWh (use your off-peak home rate for the most favourable result). The calculator applies default fuel efficiencies (7 L/100km petrol, 18 kWh/100km EV) and a default annual service saving, both of which you can override.

Does the calculator include depreciation, rego and insurance?

This tool focuses on the running-cost side — fuel vs electricity and servicing — which is where the year-on-year savings come from. Depreciation, rego and insurance vary heavily by model and state and can swing the result in either direction, so we deliberately keep them out of the headline break-even number. Is home solar charging counted in the break-even?

Only if you enter the effective $/kWh you pay. If you charge from excess rooftop solar, your effective rate can be as low as 5c/kWh, which dramatically shortens the break-even period. Enter your real blended rate — for most Australian drivers that is the overnight off-peak tariff of around 15-20c/kWh.

What if the EV is more expensive but never breaks even?

It happens. If the EV premium is large and annual kilometres are low, the cumulative savings may never overtake the upfront gap inside a typical ownership period. In that case the EV still delivers other value (driving feel, lower emissions, future resale) but the pure financial payback is negative. The calculator shows this honestly rather than hiding it.

Why is the EV break-even different from fuel savings?

Fuel savings are the annual running-cost advantage — typically $1,500-2,500 a year for an Australian driver on home off-peak power. The break-even is how many of those annual savings it takes to repay the higher purchase price of the EV. A car with great fuel savings but a very high EV premium can still take a long time to break even.
